BONNIE RAITT BIOGRAPHY
Bonnie Raitt first emerged on the music scene in 1971 with a critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. But she did not fulfill the potential that first album promised until the release of her tenth album, Nick of Time, in 1989. The album swept the Grammys, earning her four awards. Raitt grew up with politically active Quaker parents in Los Angeles; her father, John Raitt, was a Broadway musical star, and her mother was an accomplished pianist. Raitt decided she would never be as good on the piano as her mother, so she began playing the guitar at the age of nine. She went off to Radcliffe, and picking up the activist torch her parents had passed to her, she protested the Vietnam War and studied African culture in order to teach in Tanzania. Her plans were sidetracked when she began playing in local blues houses, befriending musicians like Junior Wells, and hooking up with Little Feat's Paul Barrere to form the Bluesbusters. She dropped out of Radcliffe and signed with Warner Brothers, and her sophisticated guitar technique and sexy voice made for an impressive first album in 1971. Though she achieved some success with subsequent albums, it wasn't until the anti-nuclear campaigns were over and her alcoholism under control that she achieved true success. Nick of Time, released in 1989, spawned several hit singles, including "Thing Called Love." Her winning streak continued with 1991's Luck of the Draw and 1994's Longing in Their Hearts, both of which earned her Grammys. ...More
